Liverpool bring in QPR defender Caulker to boost injury-ravaged squad

Jurgen Klopp hopes to have him available for tomorrow night.

JURGEN KLOPP HAS bolstered his resources with the loan signing of defender Steven Caulker from Queens Park Rangers.

The 24-year-old, who will move to Anfield on a deal until the end of the season, had been on loan at Southampton but that agreement was cancelled to allow him sign for the Reds.

Following the completion of the deal, Caulker was successfully registered before the Premier League’s 12pm deadline, and will be eligible to face Arsenal should he be named in the squad for Wednesday’s fixture.

The centre-back is currently on his way to Liverpool’s Melwood training ground, and is hoping to arrive at the complex in time to be involved in the Reds’ training session at 4pm.

In a statement on the club’s website, Liverpool said the player ‘showed willingness to commit to the Reds at short notice.’

Klopp has been forced to contend with a succession of injuries with Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren both sidelined with hamstring complaints and Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho nursing knocks ahead of tomorrow.

Defender Tiago Ilori was recalled from his loan spell at Aston Villa as cover and played in the FA Cup draw with Exeter last Friday.

Caulker moved to Southampton on a season-long loan from Loftus Road but failed to force his way into the reckoning under Ronald Koeman. He featured just three times in the league at St Mary’s.

He enjoyed previous spells with Tottenham and Cardiff and won his England cap in a friendly against Sweden in November 2012.
