Liverpool snap up Irish starlet Kelleher

The teenage shot-stopper is understood to have signed a four-year contract with the Reds after impressing with the Boys in Green and Ringmahon Rangers.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND youth international goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has signed a four-year deal with Liverpool.

Cork club Ringmahon Rangers confirmed that the 16-year-old had “officially signed” for the Premier League giants on Thursday and congratulated their Under-17s squad member and his family on his achievement.

The goalkeeper will spend two years at the club’s academy in Kirkby before eventually graduating to the first-team setup at Melwood.

Kelleher recently played a part in Ireland’s qualification for the final stage of the Uefa Under-17s European Championship, featuring in all three games of the Elite qualifying round against Greece, Belarus and Poland.

The shot-stopper also helped his club win the Cork Youth Leagues U17 Premier League this season.

In making a move to Britain, Kelleher is emulating his brother, Fiacre, who is a Republic of Ireland Under-19s international and currently plays for Scottish champions Celtic.

The goalkeeper also follows in the footsteps of former Ringmahon players such as Alan Browne and Gearoid Morrissey, who secured moves to Britain in recent years, joining Preston North End and Cambridge United, respectively.
