Despite being slightly affected himself, Colin Pascoe filled the breach for the absent Rodgers and the Liverpool assistant said it was a tough experience.
“This morning Brendan phoned me at about eight am and I was not feeling very well myself as you can probably tell,” Pascoe said.
“He was worse than me and obviously we came down and talked, he was not so good and was very white.
“We were in the hotel and all the preparations and everything was done for the match today and unfortunately he woke up and was not very well.
“The way the medical team and the doctors try to isolate the players and the staff, they have been fantastic and hopefully they have nipped it in the bud and not too many players or staff will be affected.”
Pascoe was full of praise for his players as a double from Luis Suarez and a header from Daniel Agger allowed Liverpool to gain another valuable three points.
“They were awesome today, absolutely fantastic, the way they played and conducted themselves allowed them to control the game,” he said.
“The back four were superb and we can go through all the team in what was a great team performance today and with Luis creating and scoring chances.”
