LIVERPOOL CLOSED THE gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City to three points as Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah sealed a 2-0 win against Brighton on Saturday.
Diaz opened the scoring in the first half and Salah netted with a penalty after the interval at the Amex Stadium.
Jurgen Kloppโs side have won their last eight league games, keeping the pressure on City, with the champions playing at Crystal Palace on Monday.
While City are in fine form, Liverpoolโs hot streak is equally impressive.
The Reds have scored 21 goals and conceded just twice in their winning run, while also keeping a third successive league clean sheet for the first time this term.
When Salah converted from the spot, it made Liverpool only the second club to score 2,000 goals in the Premier League, emulating Manchester United.
Salah has reached 20 goals in a Premier League season for the fourth time, with his latest strike coming at just the right time amid his tense contract negotiations.
Klopp said on Friday it is up to Salah whether he signs a new deal, a claim that was followed by the Egypt forwardโs agent tweeting a series of laughing emojis just minutes later.
Salahโs current deal runs until the end of next season and he has previously said his future is in Liverpoolโs hands and he is not asking for โcrazy stuffโ.
His long-term value to Liverpool is immense, but of more immediate concern to Klopp will be the knock that saw him replaced by Diogo Jota soon after his first goal in four games.
With a testing trip to Arsenal looming on Wednesday followed by an FA Cup quarter-final at Nottingham Forest, Klopp will hope his star makes a quick recovery.
Liverpool, chasing an unprecedented quadruple, suffered only their third defeat this season against Inter Milan in the Champions League last-16 second leg in midweek.
But Klopp insisted his players are such bad losers that they were certain to mount an immediate response to the Inter loss, which didnโt stop them progressing to the quarter-finals on aggregate in any case.
The Germanโs assessment proved correct, after a lively Brighton start that saw Neal Maupay drill his strike just wide and Leandro Trossard curl his shot straight at Alisson Becker.
Liverpool responded emphatically and Salah picked out Sadio Mane, whose close-range effort was pushed away by Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
Kloppโs team took the lead in the 19th minute when Diaz sprinted onto Joel Matipโs perfectly-weighted pass and bravely headed into the empty net as Sanchez rushed off his line, pole-axing the Colombian with a dangerous high challenge in the process.
Diaz was unable to celebrate as he was writhing on the turf after being caught in the chest by Sanchezโs leg, but the keeper surprisingly escaped a red card following a VAR check.
Diazโs second goal since signing from Porto in January was almost followed by one for Salah, whose incisive burst ended with a low drive that forced Sanchez to save at his near post.
Trossard shot wastefully over from Maupayโs defence-splitting pass soon after the interval.
Salah almost made him pay for that miss with a deflected effort that looped onto the crossbar.
Liverpoolโs luck was out on that occasion but they doubled their lead in the 61st minute.
Naby Keitaโs shot was blocked by Yves Bissoumaโs arm, conceding a penalty that Salah drove past Sanchez with ease to keep the title race bubbling nicely.
Irish internationals Caoimhรญn Kelleher and Shane Duffy were unused substitutes for their respective sides.
A routine comfortable Liverpool win without them needing to hit top gear and not a game to excite any spectators. Had the potential to be a tricky game given Brightons recent form against Liverpool. Slightly concerning that the players didnโt lift their performances after the Inter game, though hopefully can for bigger games to come. Diaz looking quality and was easily MOTM. How VAR didnโt ask ref to review Sanchez foul is unbelievable, he didnโt even get a yellow card when the challenge was 100% a red for dangerous play. Surely the ref and linesman could see that it was a red card. Expect more apologies similar to that given to Everton after Man City handball not given
@Ger Power: between VAR and the new rule changes than have happened over the last few years I no longer enjoy watching football. I canโt even explain the offside or handball rules anymore.
@Roy Dowling: this is it
The arsenal game Wednesday is huge. Despite the harder fixture list I think if they can manage to take 3 points from the Emirates they will sneak the title. Could be completely wrong of course its only a prediction but if they are within reach of city come April they will take them in the eitihad. Just have this sense that something is building
@WESHALLNOTBEMOVED: yep a huge game, Liverpool will certainly need to raise the tempo and accuracy to get the needed win. Arsenal in good form and will punish any lapses.
@WESHALLNOTBEMOVED: City are liable to drop points on Monday, Palace a bit of a bogey team for them when the pressure is on, thereโll be a few more twists and turns here Iโd say.
Relentless. Comfortable win. The defensive cohesion is getting back to 18/19 levels. Never looked in danger of dropping points today without not playing like they can. The quick turn around in games seems to be Liverpoolโs advantage at the moment. Also, Joel matip on a free transfer.
@Darren Fitzpatrick: 19/20. Wow
@Darren Fitzpatrick: always found Matip under rated, maybe because it seemed that he got injured regularly and doesnโt have the physical presence of VVD but is a top defender who can come out of defence with the ball and set up attacks. A terrific free transfer
@Ger Power: absolutely Ger. Iโd go as far as saying heโs been the better of the two all season albeit VVD has raised his game big time in the last 6 weeks. Hopefully stay lucky with injuries going forward now
Brilliant team brilliant club and ran like a business as it should. No dirty oil money or no crooked Russians
Comfortable win but sloppy at the back and not sharp enough up front but hopefully theyโre holding a bit back.
Happy with that, only a Mater of time before weโre champions again baring city sort their free fall.
