Manchester United 2-0 Swansea City
6 May 2012
4:01PM
Can a miracle still happen? Can Manchester United trounce Swansea…or is that the wrong question? Can they even win?
6 May 2012
4:02PM
The teams
Man Utd: De Gea, Jones, Smalling, Ferdinand, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Scholes, Young, Rooney, Hernandez. Subs: Amos, Berbatov, Giggs, Park, Nani, Rafael Da Silva, Cleverley.
There is a bit of a buzz about Old Trafford despite expectations being undeniably dampened after the City result.
6 May 2012
4:10PM
Swansea zipping the ball about. It’s an open game at the moment.
6 May 2012
4:14PM
United look to break but, rather than subtler effort, Rooney powers a pass at Hernandez who naturally miscontrols in the box.
6 May 2012
4:21PM
Twenty minutes in. United on top but not really creating. That trouncing doesn’t look like it’s coming as yet.
6 May 2012
4:23PM
Chaos in the Swansea box there as Evra pummels a shot at goal, Vorm bats it away and then does the same for Rooney’s impressive – and acrobatic – response to the rebound.
6 May 2012
4:29PM
GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Swansea
A well-worked United goal as Valencia beats his full-back and cuts the ball back for Carrick. He fires at goal only for Scholes to backheel it in. Impudent. But there’s barely a celebration. For United, it’s just about totting these up now.
6 May 2012
4:30PM
And Hernandez goes close moments later…
6 May 2012
4:33PM
And Hernandez shoulders just over now after Scholes diverted a cross on. It could/should be 3-0 to United.
6 May 2012
4:35PM
6 May 2012
4:35PM
Rooney curls over from just outside the box having perhaps weighed up the options a bit too long as he bore down on goal.
6 May 2012
4:42PM
GOAL! Manchester United 2-0 Swansea
Surely not? Ashley Young hurries the pick the ball out of the net having curled into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after Rooney’s strike was blocked. There is a sense of focus about them here.
6 May 2012
4:46PM
And Smalling just wide from a corner… this could be 5-0 to United at the moment.
6 May 2012
4:48PM
Half-time. A rare focus about United.
6 May 2012
5:03PM
Ferguson walks out for the second half with his head faced towards the ground.
6 May 2012
5:05PM
The second half is off…
6 May 2012
5:11PM
So close to a third for United as Rooney crosses and Dyer just cuts out the cross before Young can reach it.
6 May 2012
5:20PM
United still in complete control but they did have a scare there as Sinclair almost forced a finish at the other end. Valencia just went close himself, with the ball bouncing around the box.
6 May 2012
5:22PM
And Dyer blazes over now! United not quite as focused as they were at the end of the second half. But then a dip was somewhat inevitable.
6 May 2012
5:26PM
Tom Cleverley on for Paul Scholes.
6 May 2012
5:31PM
Swansea have done themselves credit with the way they’ve recollected themselves after what looked set to be a rout. Causing United problems now.
6 May 2012
5:33PM
Rooney misses from just yards out after a great pass from Carrick. That really should have been 3-0.
6 May 2012
5:37PM
Berbatov coming on for Rooney, in what will likely be his last appearance at Old Trafford (the Bulgarian that is).
6 May 2012
5:54PM
Full-time: Manchester United 2-0 Swansea City
No real assault on the goal difference, then, for United but they did get the result that means the title race goes to the final day. City, at the very least, have to match whatever United do at Sunderland against QPR.
As it happened: Manchester United v Swansea
