As it happened: Liverpool v Fulham, Premier League

We went minute-by-minute as Liverpool sought a return to winning ways.

It’s a time for giving, and Brendan Rodgers is certainly hoping the that jolly old Martin Jol will gift wrap three points for the Reds.

As always, we’d love you to get in contact.

Liverpool 4 – 0 Fulham

Evening all. here’s some quick team news from Anfield Road.

Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Jose Enrique, Gerrard, Lucas, Shelvey, Fernandez Saez, Suarez, Downing.

Subs: Jones, Sahin, Henderson, Carragher, Allen, Sterling, Wisdom.

Fulham: Schwarzer, Riether, Hangeland, Hughes, Riise, Kacaniklic, Karagounis, Baird, Richardson, Dejagah, Berbatov.

Subs: Stockdale, Senderos, Kasami, Briggs, Rodallega, Frei, Tavares.

KICK OFF: Here we go.

bit of a quiet start from either side here. Both have had a brief inoffensive spell in possession.

Liverpool win a corner on the left and somehow Daniel Agger finds about 10 square yards of space in the area. His header sails well over the bar, though,

It is a very quiet stadium at the minute. A rattler near the commentary booth is the dominant piece of the atmosphere… for now.

GOAL! Liverpool 1 – 0 Fulham (Skrtel ’8)

There’s the early breakthrough the Reds were dreaming of. The centre half befitted from more atrocious set-piece defending but his finish was terrific. Taking a touch before smashing the volley emphatically into the back of the net.

Poor old Kieran Richardson, Dimitar Berbatov is getting booed by the home crowd but nobody cares about Richardson’s history with United.

Liverpool will win this game comfortably as Fulham have barely winced at going a goal down. Stewart Downing went close with a powerful long-range strike.

More bad news for Fulham as Sascha Riether hobbles to the sideline. Philippe Senderos is warming up.

OH DEAR!

What a let-off for Fulham. Daniel Agger has sent one into orbit with the goal gaping.

Gerrard’s shot deflect right to Suarez who smashed across goal. The defender slid into the six-yard box, but sent it almost vertical and into the upper tier.

This is pretty poor from Fulham as a collective. Aside from the odd touch and dink from Berbatov they look like they’re happy to phone this one in.

And when Dimi Berbatov is your most committed player, you got problems.

Just as I say that, though, Dejagah finds Richardson in the middle and he sends a swerving low shot which Reina has to clear with his foot.

Lovely piece of play from Suarez, spinning into the middle before putting a deft reverse ball into the area for Suso to chase.

Fulham just about manage to snuff out the danger.

Here’s how that goal looked. Serious tekkerz from the Slovakian.

GOAL! Liverpool 2 – 0 Fulham (Gerrard ’35)

The skipper doubles the lead, shooting across goal from a tight angle after some superb work from Downing.

And it could have been three.

Again, the Reds carve the defence open and work the ball to Suso in the left side of the penalty area. But he drags the shot wide.

Another route in behind the white line. Gerrard picks out Suarez’ run over the top. Shelvey darts towards the near post, but he falls after contact and the Uruguayan attempts to poke a finish past the ‘keeper at the near post, but he’s alive to the danger.

HALF TIME: Liverpool 2 – 0 Fulham

All going according to plan for Liverpool. The whites, however, look like they didn’t have one to begin with.

Right, ready for the second half? Well, it’s here anyway.

Hugo Rodallega is on the field with Chris Baird making way.

But the first opening of the half predictably goes the home side’s way. Suarez latching onto a cross to the back post with his left foot, but it goes harmlessly wide.

Glen Johnson is beginning to enjoy himself out there. Showing his close control and subtle touch as he keeps Fulham defenders guessing, passing up a chance to lay it off to Suarez before digging out a cross.

GOAL! Liverpool 3 – 0 Fulham (Downing ‘ 51)

Who said Downing was on his way out, he’s been very effective for the Reds tonight, setting up Gerrard and now thumping in the third.

Gerrard switched a pass to the winger on the right, and he ran at Riise who back-peddled long enough for the former Boro man to shoot from 18 yards and it flew in at the near post.

Fulham are being allowed possession and territory now.

That goal has been the signal for Liverpool to rock back on their heels and defend their area. No doubt preserving energy for the busy Christmas Schedule ahead.

And the boy Downing goes close again. Cutting in from the right and fizzing a shot which swerves just wide of the top corner.

70 minutes: Here comes Raheem Stirling. Maybe he’ll give an extra dimension to this game.  The wunderkind replaces Suso.

Stirling’s first act is to manufacture a one-two with JJ Shelvey, it almost works out, but Hangeland gets a foot in and it’s a corner.

The set-piece is over hit and goes out for a goal kick to the groans of the crowd.

Joe Allen is now on in place of Shelvey.

And another Stirling one-two brings a penalty appeal from the Kop after he’s bundled over before receiving the touch from Suarez. Nothing doing.

Dejagah, doesn’t have the, ahem, moves today. He clumsily scythes down Jose Enrique and incurs a yellow  card.

The free on the left is whipped in and deflects to Gerrard, whose side-footed shot is straight at the ‘keeper.

if you told us two months ago that Liverpool would be winning a league game 3-0 and Suarez had a quiet night, we’d have called a social worker.

He’s just embarked on his first little dribble of the night, ended inside the box by a decent tackle from big Brede.

Two shots in a minute there for Berbatov, running at the defence with Anfield’s boos ringing in his ears.

The first, was low and powerful and Reina spilled, but Skrtel was on hand to tidy up.

The second was from an angle left of goal and with his left foot. Harmless.

Here comes Jamie Carragher. Lucas the man to receive the shepherd’s crook

Yellow card for Karagounis as he cuts down Sterling on the very edge of the area.

Suarez puts the ball down on the left edge of the box, and…..

… no goal.

89 Minutes: Dejagah with a long range shot that takes a deflection. Corner to Fulham. Goodness, they’re not at the races tonight at all.

Three minutes added time.

The only decent thing Fulham have done: Rodallega with a weel-struck free-kick from 22,23 yards which is palmed away by Reina at the near post.

At the other end….

GOAL!

GOAL! Liverpool 4 – 0 Fulham (Suarez ’93)

Enrique dribbled at goal up the by-line and cuts it back to the number seven who taps in the finish in front of the Kop.

FULL TIME: Liverpool 4 – 0 Fulham

It’s all over. But in truth, Fulham never really got started and showed no sign of recovering from their early setback.

Liverpool move back into the top half of the table.

Happy Christmas.
