As it happened: Castres -v- Munster

He only went and did it again! Ronan O’Gara’s last gasp drop goal sealed the points for Munster as they faced Castres in the South of France on Saturday evening.

Full-time: Castres 24-27 Munster

Two magnificent kicks from Pierre Bernard to open the scoring and make it 6-0 after barely five minutes. Munster in early disarray.

A better kick from O’Gara – going direct for the first time in the match and making some good distance. Will Munster need their talisman to get them out of jail again?

Meanwhile, Marc Andreu is forced off the pitch on a stretcher. Doesn’t look good for the Castres wing.

Try for Castres! Munster are light in defence and the French take advantage. Brice Mach sells the dummy and goes over himself, Conor Murray caught out of position. Bernard misses the conversion and Mach has to go off injured, replaced by Bonello.

Twenty minutes gone and, while Munster have settled down somewhat, they still need to register some kind of score soon.

O’Gara makes an attempt at a drop goal but hooks it wide…

Try for Munster! Howlett shows he’s back to his All Black best, taking a pass from James Coughlan and spilling over the Castres line. A good move. O’Gara converts.

An uncharacteristic miss from O’Gara. That penalty seemed to be nailed on. A dreadful miscue.

Try for Castres! Turnover from the French who break, and it’s the replacement Lakafia who dinks inside Howett before scoring. Bernard converts.

What were Munster doing, giving the ball away yards from their own line?

O’Gara to Barnes to Mafi but, just when it seems the arrears could be reduced again, the chance goes begging.

Munster need to get some points on the board and are awarded a penalty deep into added time. O’Gara dissects the posts. 18-10.

The teams are back out and the game is back on…

Try for Munster! Peter O’Mahony has been a bastion of strength and determination today he takes the wraparound from Murray before storming through. Just what they needed. O’Gara narrows it to a single point.

Bernard hasn’t had a shot at goal in a while, and it tells. He drags his penalty wide.

Castres deserve that Bernard penalty after their response to the try…

Apparently, Tom-ass O’Leary is on for Munster. How hard is it to pronounce Tomás???

O’Gara gets a good hold of the ball from 50 yards but his attempt at a drop goal is just wide.

Castres surge towards the Munster 22. It’s a shame that the visitors have not been able to build on that O’Mahony try. O’Gara’s drop goal attempt aside, it’s been all Castres.

Denis Leamy has stripped off and is ready to enter the field of play.

Try for Munster! Great pressure from O’Gara who charges down a Castres kick. He passes it to Denis Leamy, who finds Will Chambers. Chambers goes over and Munster have the lead for the first time in the game. Fine conversion too.

A sad end to the game for the brilliant Peter O’Mahony, who has taken a blow and is being carried off. Denis Fogarty is coming on.

Castres draw level with another Bernard penalty. As with last week, it’s going to be a compelling last ten minutes…

Our collegue Niall Kelly makes a good point…

A poor decision from Johne Murphy, whose kick at goal fails to trouble the opposition. Not sure what he was thinking..

Just under two minutes remaining… Castres have the advantage..

Munster steal the ball and Denis Hurley kicks towards the line. Poor decision, he should have held on to the ball. 22 dropout for Castres.

O’Gara… has… DONE IT AGAIN!

On his 99th Heineken Cup appearance, the fly-half tees the ball up and lands the drop goal deep, deep into stoppage time. Phenomenal. That’s the end of the game. Munster have stolen the win after a bruising game that was low on quality but high on intensity.
