Fans are now hanging football jerseys on the Liam Whelan bridge

Having been defaced and subsequently cleaned, locals in Cabra and Phibsboro are taking the opportunity to remember the former Busby Babe.

THE LIAM WHELAN Bridge on Dublin City’s northside was defaced yesterday when vandals sprayed the words ‘LFC Munich Bastard’ around the former Busby Babe’s plaque.

Former Manchester United forward and Ireland international Whelan died in the Munich Air Disaster of 1958 and the bridge, near Dalymount Park in Phibsboro, has been named after him for the past eight years.

Volunteers from Bohemians came together to clean off the graffiti yesterday evening and Cabra neighbourhood watch are now encouraging people to drape jerseys and scarfs on the bridge as a tribute to Whelan.

As you can see in the picture, fans have already left Man United, Liverpool and Sunderland shirts as well as an Ireland flag.
