Liam Hayes defended Sean Cavanagh but criticised Mickey Harte. TV3 screengrab

Liam Hayes: 'Mickey Harte needs to buy a big mirror and take a look at himself'

The former Meath footballer channelled his inner-Brolly on TV3 this afternoon.

TV3 WERE NEVER going to let their GAA coverage rival over at RTÉ have all the Joe Brolly/Tyrone story to themselves.

Brolly sparked a flurry of debate, argument and counter-argument on Saturday as he took Mickey Harte and Sean Cavanagh to task over the manner in which Tyrone defeated Monaghan at Croke Park.

The former Derry footballer said the Red Hand county had achieved ‘something absolutely rotten’ as several players systematically fouled Monaghan players to prevent scoring chances from developing. Harte hit back at the comments and accused Brolly of ‘a complete tirade’.

Speaking before TV3′s live coverage of Kerry’s All-Ireland quarter final with Cavan, Liam Hayes defended Cavanagh for his foul on goal-bound Conor McManus but had a pop at the Harte’s long leash policy on player discipline.

He said, “Every year, people pick on one team and [this year] they are picking on Tyrone… It was a rugby tackle but those tackles happen. Sean Cavanagh did what he had to do.”

The former Meath footballer and two-time All-Ireland winner took exception with the antics of Tyrone players Martin Penrose and Conor Gormley for digs directed at Monaghan’s Dessie Mone. Penrose was red carded for his part in the half-time scuffle but Gormley escaped sanction. Hayes declared:

Mickey Harte has been talking for years about people buying mirrors and looking at themselves. He needs to buy a big, long mirror himself and take a look at himself and his team.”

Fellow TV3 pundits Darragh O’Sé and Sean Connell refused to condemn Cavanagh for his foul on McManus despite host Matt Cooper describing it as a rugby tackle.
