Leitrim dump All-Ireland champions Galway from Connacht U21 football championship

A late, late point won the day for Shane Ward’s men.

Leitrim 0-9

Galway 0-8

LEITRIM HAVE REACHED the Connacht U21 final for the first time in sixteen years after a dramatic win over All-Ireland champions Galway in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada this evening.

The sides were level going into added time at the end of the game after Damien Comer had pointed for Galway. However, there was still time for Niall Brady to point and give Shane Ward’s team the victory.

It all looked so different in the early stages when a strong start for the Tribesmen — who had eight of last year’s winning squad in their starting XV — saw them lead by as many as four points in the first half before going into the break 0-6 to 0-3 ahead.

Leitrim remained doggedly determined however and levelled the game at seven apiece in the 48th minute before taking the lead for the first time when Cian Clinton pointed in the 59th.

However, despite Comer looking as if he had rescued the defending champions, Brady’s point sealed a memorable win.
