Coghlan-Murray stars as Leinster beat Leeds to claim British & Irish Cup

The Blues defended the trophy they claimed at the end of last season.

WINGER SAM COGHLAN-MURRAY was the try-scoring star for Leinster A as they thrashed Leeds Carnegie 44-17 at Donnybrook.

Leinster were 6-0 up after two Cathal Marsh penalties in the opening 12 minutes. Coghlan-Murray got over for his first try after 15 minutes and Marsh landed a fine conversion.

The Leeds responses came in the paltry form of a John Bentley penalty before Leinsterโ€™s Luke McGrath stretched his sideโ€™s lead with a line-break and score. Coghlan-Murray added his second after the break and, with Marsh converting, the lead was 27-3.

Marsh knocked over a penalty before Darragh Fanning steamed through to the delight of the home support. Leeds registered two quick tries to give them a glimmer of hope that was stamped upon as Brendan Macken intercepted outside his 22 and sprinted in his teamโ€™s fifth try.

We are gonna need a bigger trophy cabinet. Gotta leave some space for the Pro12 trophy next week too. Allez les Bleus!

True, but itโ€™s easy to be smart after the fact. Much more fun to take the risk and back your team beforehand and take your medicine if things go awry.

The quality is there, undoubtedly but I question whether Oโ€™Connor will utilise it. His incorporation of youths last season was quite bad, in particular, that of McGrath and Coghlan-Murray. But credit where credit is due, he handled Noel Reid well this season.

Iโ€™m still ambivalent about Oโ€™Connor but this is, by far, my biggest qualm with his management.

Give the Leinster job to Connor Oโ€™Shea or Girvan Dempsey! Give Mark McCall the Keys to Ravenhill and with Foley a Munster legend and Pat Lam from Roscommon weโ€™ll have 4 top top quality indigenous head coaches in our provinces!!!

Would like to see Dempsey as backs coach next season, with the aim of having a Dempsey/Cullen coaching team in 2/3 years. Maybe with BOD as backs coach!

Coughlin-Murray is a serious talent, as are Luke McGrath and Cathal Marsh. Lots of players impressed me though. I thought for the first time as long as Iโ€™ve seen him, Quinn Roux had a seriously physical game and put in some shuddering hits. I donโ€™t know if this is his level or if he can bring that through to the senior team, but I think heโ€™s an underrated player who could be a real diamond in the rough.
