Leeds United announce partnership with San Francisco 49ers

One wonders what Peter Ridsdale’s tropical fish would make of the deal?

LEEDS UNITED ARE back in the [marketing] big time after announcing a new partnership with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Championship side are to get all the merchandising, commercial, retail and sponsorship tips they need from the NFL giants. The 49ers are excited about partnering ‘a club with an international following as well as great history and tradition’.

If the San Francisco franchise were enthused by the deal, United were positively beside themselves. Their managing director, David Haigh said, “The 49ers are a worldwide brand, and we’ll be discussing all aspects of our business; marketing, ticketing, merchandising, and commercial opportunities, and hopefully tapping into and sharing knowledge with them.”

The Leeds United press release does not mention if a sum of money has been exchanged between the sides or if United jerseys will be sold in the 49ers Levi’s Stadium, when they move in, later this year.

The announcement follows a bigger deal brokered between Manchester City and the New York Yankees last May. The football and baseball teams have pooled together to purchase a Major League Soccer franchise for in the region $100m.
