Lee Westwood is foiled by a wicker basket

It was bound to happen sooner or later.

ONE OF THE many traditions at Merion Gold Course is the presence of wicker baskets pins instead of flags.

As well as making it difficult for players to judge the wind, they can also act as annoying obstacles – as Lee Westwood found out yesterday.

On the 12th hole, his third shot was looking good until it struck the basket.
