Late, late show gives Cork win over Drogheda

While Limerick got the better of Shamrock Rovers in Thomond.

DANNY MORRISSEY WAS the hero for Cork as his 87th minute winner gave the Leesiders all three points on the road to Drogheda United tonight.

The visitors started the brighter and were rewarded on 11 minutes when Ciaran Kilduff picked up Morrissey’s through ball and the former Shamrock Rovers front man finished with aplomb.

City soon doubled their lead, Kilduff turning provider for Shane Duggan who ensured Gabriel Sava was picking the ball out of his net for the second time in four minutes.

Drogheda were given a glimmer of hope on the half hour when they were awarded a penalty but Ryan Brennan blasted his spot kick wide. He went some way to making amends for the miss with a goal on the stroke of half time and Drogheda were level 10 minutes into the second after Peter Hynes capitalised on some poor defending to shoot past Mark McNulty.

It looked as if the game was petering  out into a draw until Danny Morrissey popped up with the winner just three minutes from time to put three points between the sides in the battle for sixth spot.

In the night’s other game Limerick took advantage of a Shamrock Rovers side who had made nine changes to the team that beat Drogheda to win the EA Sports cup at the weekend.

The home side took the lead through Jason Hughes — in just his second start since returning to the club — on 11 minutes after the midfielder got on the end of a long throw that caused chaos in the Rovers defence.

Limerick dominated for much of the rest of the half but didn’t find a second goal until the 68th minute when Rory Gaffney buried a shot from 20 yards to give Limerick the win in front of a crowd of 933 people in Thomond Park.
