League of Ireland kick-off: is the west awake for Galway United?

In our final installment of League of Ireland club profiles, Galway United take a seat in our front room and tell us what they’re intentions are.

Club name: Galway United

Manager: Sean Connor

Founded: 1937

Stadium: Terryland Park

Players in: Shaun Kelly (Dundalk), Karl Moore (UCD), Enda Curran (Mervue United), Steve Feeney (Quayside Rovers), Bobby Ryan (Limerick FC), Sean Kelly (Limerick FC), Shaun Maher (ormerly Sporting Fingal), Brian Cash (St Pat’s), Greg Fleming (released from Oldham Athletic).

Players out: Stephen O’Donnell (Shamrock Rovers), Karl Sheppard (Shamrock Rovers), Barry Ryan (Limerick FC), Seamus Conneely (Sheffield United), Derek O’Brien (Cork City), Jamie McKenzie (Chalkanoros Idaliou), Rhys Meynell (Stalybridge Celtic), Jason Molloy (Mervue United), Tom King (Mervue United).

Sean Connor made five signings in a 24-hour period that may do more to secure Galway’s survival than any match-day ahead.  Bobby Ryan is a seasoned League of Ireland campaigner and Sean Kelly needs to realise the potential that saw him earn a place in the Arsenal academy.

Connor has admitted the club were perilously close to folding in the past few weeks. He must now be feeling more optimistic.

The target for the Tribesmen will be surival but they should be good enough to stay ahead of Drogheda. Shouldn’t they?

If they were a TD they’d be: Luke ‘Ming the Merciless’ Flanagan. Wild, western and unique. But possibly ineffective.

TheScore prediction: 9th
