League leaders Waterford deliver emphatic win as familiar face returns to haunt Cobh

Shane O’Connor was central to the south-east club’s big victory.

SHANE O’CONNOR returned to haunt his former employers as SSE Airtricity League First Division leaders delivered an emphatic 4-0 victory over nearest rivals Cobh Ramblers at the RSC.

With the game scoreless at the break, O’Connor opened the scoring early in the second-half and doubled the hosts’ lead on the hour mark.

David McDaid put Cobh out of sight with a third in the 77th-minute while Dean Walsh added a fourth deep in injury time.

The result moves the south-east club nine points clear now at the top of the table.

Elsewhere, UCD also racked up a 4-0 win over Athlone Town with George Kelly grabbing a hat-trick. Jason McElland was also on the scoresheet and the Students now move to within three points of Cobh and have a game in-hand.

Cabinteely were 1-0 winners over Shelbourne thanks to Jack Watson’s 91st-minute winner while Longford grabbed a 2-1 away victory against Wexford.
