WEEK TWO’S SHOW began with Master v Apprentice as former St Patrick’s Athletic assistant Trevor Croly welcomed Liam Buckley’s side to Tallaght.
And it was Croly who prevailed in the game dubbed ‘The Luas Derby’ thanks to a combination of clinical finishing and some awful defending from the Saints.
On Gary McCabe’s 20-yard strike, co-commentator for the night Pat Morley declared: “There’s plenty of sugar in his tea”. We haven’t heard that one before.
Back in the studio, Colm Foley later said that Pat’s keeper Brendan Clarke should have made the save, which seems harsh as there did look to be an almighty swerve on the flight of the ball.
It has been a promising start to the campaign from Rovers and after Friday night’s win, they travelled to Phibsboro for their first meeting with Bohemians. However, there was more happening off the field than on as the Dublin rivals Derek Foran produced a dull affair.
Derek Foran could have no complaints about being sent off after picking up two deserved bookings.
Two men who met several times in this fixture, Pat Fenlon and Michael O’Neill, took time out to give their thoughts on topics such as the strength of the league in comparison to years gone by.

Unfortunately, it was pretty difficult to hear what Northern Irish boss O’Neill had to say…
Cork City fans can have reason to be optimistic after Friday’s result, which saw them overcome Bohemians. After enduring a difficult campaign with Shamrock Rovers last year, Daryl Kavanagh is shining at Turner’s Cross since arriving and along with Daryl Horgan was Cork’s creative outlet against Bohs.
On Saturday, Sligo shot to the top of the table with a convincing win over Bray. Manager Ian Baraclough played down the victory but, having suggested that his recent acquisitions can be better than departed players such as Jason McGuinness and Mark Quigley a couple of weeks back, two of his new boys were on the scoresheet at the Showgrounds.
Striker Anthony Elding notched two headers and is already looking like one of the signings of the season, while Kieran Djali added the third with a controlled strike.
Over at Hunky Doreys Park, the meeting of Drogheda and Limerick had it all – FOUR penalties, three red cards (when you include Limerick manager Stuart Taylor) and some pretty embarrassing theatrics from Shels midfielder Dave Cassidy after Axel Bossokota stupidly squared up to him.
Derry recorded the biggest win of the season so far with a 6-0 drubbing of UCD in a game which the Students and goalkeeper Ger Barron in particular will be having nightmares about for awhile.
FAI Cup final hero Rory Patterson claimed a hat-trick but it was Mark Griffin who produced the most eye-catching finish. “A tough night” is what UCD boss Martin Russell called it… and it’s unlikely to be their last.
Stephen Kenny’s new look Dundalk seem to be gelling nicely and while it has been a worrying enough start for Shels, they can go some way to putting things right against Pat’s tonight.
