DUBLIN DUO SINÉAD Aherne and Noelle Healy, and Mayo veteran Cora Staunton have been nominated for the 2017 TG4 Senior Players’ Player of the year award.
Aherne — who was also nominated for the gong last year — captained the Sky Blues to All-Ireland senior glory for the first time since 2010 in September, while Healy was named Player of the Match on the day.
In her remarkable 23rd season with Mayo, Staunton joins them on three player shortlist. The 35-year-old sharpshooter has recently signed a deal to move to the AFLW, and will line out in the Connacht senior club final replay for her club Carnacon on Sunday.
Of course, all three players are nominated for All-Stars, and if Staunton is to win one it will be a record-equaling 11th to her name.
In the intermediate ranks, it’s two nominees from All-Ireland champions Tipperary and one from finalists Tyrone.
Player of the Match in the final Aisling McCarthy has been named on the shortlist, as has her teammate Aishling Moloney. Tyrone captain Neamh Woods will also contest the accolade.
Carlow’s Edel Hayden, Derry’s Emma Doherty and London’s Lisa Cafferkey have all been shortlisted for the TG4 Junior Players’ Player of the Year award.
The winners will be announced at the 2017 TG4 All-Star award banquet, whichtakes place at the Citywest Hotel on Saturday 25 November.
Last year, Cork’s Brid Stack was named Senior Players’ Player of the Year while Kildare’s Aisling Holton and Longford’s Mairead Reynolds took home the Intermediate and Junior prizes.
The nominees in all three categories have been voted for by their fellow players. They could not vote for teammates.
