Commons gives Celtic the edge over Elfsborg

Kris Commons’ second-half header gave Celtic a 1-0 win over the Swedes.

CELTIC WILL TAKE a slender lead into the second leg of their Champions League third round qualifier after they beat Elfsborg 1-0 tonight.

Kris Commons scored the game’s only goal, heading home a pinpoint cross from Emilio Izaguirre in the 77th minute.

Mo Bangura, who is currently on loan at Elfsborg from the Hoops, started up front for the visitors at Parkhead.

But the striker didn’t dent the European dreams of his parent club and instead it was Commons who moved them a step closer to a place in the qualifying play-off.

Neil Lennon’s side open their SPL title defence at home to Ross County on Saturday before travelling to Sweden for the second leg next Wednesday.
