Kingston, Orr lead KLM Open as McGinley impresses

An Irishman was expected to challenge at the KLM Open but it was Paul McGinley that did so on Saturday with Rory McIlroy not too far behind.

A SUPERB RUN of five birdies and an eagle over seven holes has moved Paul McGinley right into contention at the KLM Open in Holland.

The Dubliner finished with a round of 64 for his efforts and now lies in a tie for fourth on -8 along with four other golfers including Niclas Fasth and Simon Dyson – all of whom are two shots behind joint leaders James Kingston and Gary Orr (both -10) and one behind David Lynn (-9).

McGinley began his day on the tenth and turned in 28 strokes to move from 33rd to the top of the leaderboard at one stage. However, his front nine was blighted with two bogeys and a double bogey, when he found lots of trouble on the par-four sixth. However, his card was still enough to keep him towards the fore of the chasing pack.

Rory McIlroy is eight overall and three strokes behind the leaders after carding a 68. The Holywood golfer had bogeys on the first and fourth holes before finding from form on the back nine with four birdies, including a lovely approach shot on 17 for a three on the par-four hole.

The only other Irish competitor in the field – Shane Lowry – is tied for 62nd after a round of 73 left him on one over par and the entire field will have an early start on Sunday in a bid to have the tournament finished ahead of some expected poor weather in Holland on Sunday evening.
