THE TAG OF super sub has been attached to him during his Kilkenny senior hurling career but TJ Reid is keen to shed that image and become an established fixture in the Cats line-up.
After being drafted on as a substitute during their All-Ireland quarter-final win over Limerick, Reid was rewarded by being named to play from the start of yesterdayโs semi-final meeting with Tipperary. He seized that chance by firing home 2-2 in Kilkennyโs sparkling performance and went some way towards banishing that moniker he has assumed.
โAll week I have been hearing that and as a player youโd be pissed off hearing that. Thatโs why today I went out and tried to prove myself. I put that to the back of my mind as well. For me myself, Iโm playing with the best hurlers in history probably โ Henry Shefflin and Tommy Walsh. Iโm not going to play with any better players.
โItโs great and itโs a privilege but at the end of the day I canโt just be looking at them. I have to be a leader as well and I suppose today I got the job gone. But the next day I have to go out and work even harder.โ
With Richie Hogan set to return from suspension to be available for the final, Reid believes there will be strong competition for places now in the Kilkenny forward line.
โWe just have to work our asses off in training. What you do in training is what you do on match day and we have to sit down and look at Galway. We looked at Tipperary today and had a few tactics and weโll be looking at Galway the same way. Itโs going to be a serious test in training for competition for places.
โThatโs a good thing. At least you have someone up at the other end itching again and heโs driving you on as well. For Kilkenny, over the last few years we have players like that. Thatโs probably why weโre so successful. Iโve to up it another 100%.โ
It is an absolute disgrace that Joe Schmidt doesnโt consider Duncan Casey for the Autumn Internationals.
He is praised all over the media from rugby experts and picks Strauss insteadโฆwith a very questionable reason that โhe understands how South Africa playsโ, as some newspaper reveals today.
Seriously Like!!!
Schmidt is either blind or having a laugh.
Now is the time for young lads to show if they are worthy. Come the 6 Nations itโll be too late.
A couple of points.
The only important figures missing are Healy and O Brien. The other players mentioned are not part of the core group.
Also what real importance do the Autumn internationals have outside of preparation for the 6N and the WC? (With the exception of some day maybe beating New Zealand that is)
From that perspective blooding New players has got to be good whether through design or default.
Andrew Trimble? The outstanding Irish player of the recent Six Nations? Not an important figure or part of the core group?!
You should pay more attention, old boy.
Hard to argue with Phil here, old boy.
