Kildare's goal rush topples Fermanagh, as Down pull off shock away result to crush Derry

The Lilywhites hit four goals, as Down’s unanswered opening 1-10 propelled them to an an away victory.

The result sees them return to the top of the Division 2 table.

The game was ultimately won during a 14-minute period which saw the Lilywhites hit 3-6, while Fermanagh could only respond with a single point in the same time.

The Ulster men started on the stronger foot, registering three points through Barry Mulrone and Tomas Corrigan without reply from the hosts.

From there on, Kildare took the reins however. After scoring points from play, they raised their first green flag as Tommy Moolick palmed the ball into the back of the net.

He added his second goal in the 19th minute, before Chris Healy essentially put the game to bed with Kildare’s third. Both sides exchanged points before the interval, with the scoreboard reading 3-9 to 0-9.

The home side’s fourth goal came shortly after the restart, Daniel Flynn with the strike followed by three points in succession.

That ended the game as a contest, as a dejected Fermanagh side saw out the fixture.

Meanwhile, Down surprised many to win an All-Ulster clash in the same division, as they overcame Derry.

It was the visitors’ second consecutive win following their relegation last year, as their bright start in Celtic Park was essentially the difference at the end of the day.

Down had an impressive 1-10 clocked up before an eventual Derry response seven minutes before half-time.

They raced into the lead, with Barry O’Hagan and Caolan Mooney among the scorers before Ryan Johnson drilled the ball into the net in the 21st minute.

Conor McAtamney finally got Derry off the mark, and an Emmet McGuckin goal gave them a lifeline of sorts heading into the interval.

With a mountain of work ahead but a wind advantage to help them along, Derry attempted to get back into the game as Barry Hernon and James Kielt added scores.

Down continued to pile the misery on Damian Barton’s charges but they did themselves no favours either, with an overall disappointing performance which saw them register 11 wides, both from play and scoreable frees.

The deficit was too much to make up, and Down ran out deserved winners while making a statement in the process.
