'I can’t rebirth myself': Kevin McStay fires back at 'nonsense' criticism from ex-Roscommon boss

Gay Sheerin suggested last week that McStay shouldn’t be in charge of the Rossies due to his Mayo roots.

KEVIN MCSTAY HIT back at recent criticism from within Roscommon after they gave a spirited display in a six-point defeat to Kerry on Sunday.

McStay was the subject of a scathing attack from former Roscommon player and manager Gay Sheerin last weekend.

Sheerin told Shannonside Radio he doesn’t “like to see Mayo men on the sideline for a Roscommon team.”

He went on: “I fought for years against Liam McHale and Kevin McStay, playing against them. And they hated me and they hated Roscommon.

“And they can’t have got that love (for Roscommon), there’s no way, because I couldn’t get that love for them.”

“That was the greatest load of nonsense I’ve heard,” McStay told RTE Sport after Sunday’s game in response.

“Most of it was factually incorrect and I’m expecting it to be corrected fairly soon by the station involved. That he was given that platform is very disappointing.

“I hope he’s had his day in the sunshine. When he gets time and reflects on it, as a former player and manager, he might just cop on to himself a small bit.

“It reflects badly on the group of players I have, like they’re not trying or there’s dissent in the camp. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Do you think a team could go out there and play like we did today if we’re not showing a unity and togetherness about what we’re trying to achieve for this summer?”

McStay has spent most of his adult life living in the county and managed St Brigid’s to the All-Ireland club title in 2013 – the first time a Roscommon club ever lifted the Andy Merrigan Cup.

“We had John Evans and Liam Kearns from Kerry (in charge) previously. These are not issues.

“I trained Roscommon minors twenty years ago. I’’m almost of Roscommon at this stage, my three children are from Roscommon. What do you want me to do?

“I can’t rebirth myself, if that’s the word, but it’s just very disappointing that people would take that angle.”

Sheerin is right Mayo people can’t be trusted. We need to secure our border. Build a big wall in Ballaghaderreen and make Enda Kenny pay for it.

When Mayo sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. They are bad hombres.

Sheerin made some very good points. Roscommon were that poor against mayo that something had to be said about what was going on with players leaving the squad and making themselves unavailable. He just made the argument seem petty when he mentioned that 2 mayo men have no interest in roscommon.since then the media and mcstays responses have all been on that point which isn’t the real issue of what is going on within the camp That was passion becoming silly but everything else he said that nite was spot on. Roscommon rolled over for mayo last sat nite and Sheerin was trying to state that. It’s just a pity at all the other things he said that nite were over looked as a result of a throw away silly comment

I am not personally a McStay fan, but a man that held that position previously to use a broadcasting forum like that to vent his grievance and sad perspective is unforgivable, he should be ashamed of himself.
