Irish defender Kevin Foley finds a new club after release from Charlton

The 32-year-old links-up with old boss Russell Slade at Coventry.

KEVIN FOLEY HAS joined League One strugglers Coventry City following his release from Charlton Athletic earlier in the week.

The 32-year-old, who won eight caps for Ireland but was infamously axed from Giovanni Trapattoni’s squad on the eve of Euro 2012, links-up with former manager Russell Slade at the Ricoh Arena.

Foley has signed a contract until June 2017 with the option to extend.

The former Luton and Wolves full-back is highly-rated by Slade after the pair worked together during the latter’s time in charge of Charlton at the start of the season.

Slade was sacked by the Addicks on 14 November and has since taken the reins of Coventry, who sit 22nd in the third tier.

“Very pleased to have signed,” he said. “Obviously my contract was coming to an end at Charlton and I spoke to Russell because he knew my situation at the club from when he initially signed me. I’m hoping it will be a great move for me.

“I signed an initial six month with Charlton, but the new manager came in and he has got new ideas and I was delighted to have the option to come here, it is an absolutely fantastic club not far from my home so it fit well.

“I had many years at Wolves and still live in the Midlands so it’s great to be back playing football here. I enjoyed working with Russell. I thought he had things going quite well at Charlton but he didn’t have the required time, in my opinion. That’s football.

“Russell is a manager you can talk to, he is a good person first of all and is very level-headed. He doesn’t get too carried away from the short time that I’ve known him and is just a pleasure to play for.”

After spells with Copenhagen and Ipswich following his departure from Wolves in 2015, Foley featured 20 times for Charlton this season but the London club opted against renewing his contract which expired yesterday.

The English-born defender qualified to play for Ireland through his parents and he progressed through the U21 and B national teams before making his senior debut in May 2009 against Nigeria.

He was initially named in Trapattoni’s 23-man squad for Poland/Ukraine in 2012 but was then left out after suffering hamstring problems in the lead-up to the tournament.
