THE DEPARTMENT OF Foreign Affairs has confirmed that former Kerry footballer Ray Prendiville was shot and killed in Namibia.
Prendiville, who appeared for The Kingdom against Tipperary in 1975, was a member of An Garda Síochána and was working as a security guard in Namibia. A spokesperson for the government department confirmed to TheScore.ie that it was aware of the shooting, on Friday, and of Mr Prendiville’s passing.

Tom Fleming, an Independent TD for South Kerry, spoke about Prendiville on Radio Kerry earlier today. “He was an outstanding footballer. He wore the Kerry jersey, back with the advent of the great Kerry team of the early 70s,” said Deputy Fleming.
“Ray would have a Munster championship medal and he also played with the local club back in Scartaglin and was also with the Garda team in the Dublin county championship.”
Prendiville started in the forward line for Kerry in his only senior championship appearance, against Tipperary, in June 1975. He scored a goal in the 3-13 to 0-9 triumph.
John O’Leary, public relations officer for Kerry GAA, passed on the county board’s sympathies to Prendiville’s family.
O’Leary said, “My personal recollection of Ray was that game against Tipp. There were very few hopes for the team in 1975 but they went up there and barely scraped out of it. That win spurred the team on and they went on to win the All-Ireland by beating Dublin that year.”
Kerry GAA have not requested any official tribute to Prendiville ahead of their senior footballer’s All-Ireland semi-final, against Dublin, on Sunday but are considering running a piece about him on their website.
