Ken Doherty heading for the Crucible after thrilling win over Hamilton

The Ranelagh man has qualified for the betfred.com World Championships, which begin next Saturday.

KEN DOHERTY WILL compete at this year’s Betfred.com World Snooker Championships, after beating Nottingham’s Anthony Hamilton in the final qualifying round.

The 42-year-old from Ranelagh was in danger of missing out as he let a 9-7 lead slip in the best of 19 frames match. Hamilton was 52-12 up in the final frame but Doherty pulled it back, finishing with a break of 62 to progress to the Crucible.

However, the 1997 world champion will not be joined by Steve Davis or Jimmy White in Sheffield, after both players lost their qualifiers to Ben Woollaston and Liu Chang respectively.

Stephen Hendry is also in danger of missing out on the biggest tournament of the year, although he takes a 6-3 lead over China’s Yu Delu into the final session of his qualifier.

Elsewhere, Wales’ Jamie Jones beat Ricky Walden 10-2 to secure his first Crucible appearance, while Ryan Day came from 7-3 behind to oust Northern Ireland’s Gerard Greene 10-8.
