Two Flat jockeys hospitalised with suspected spinal injuries after four-horse collision

Racing at Kempton was abandoned after the incident

CHAMPION FLAT JOCKEY Jim Crowley and Freddie Tylicki have both been hospitalised with suspected spinal injuries after a nasty incident at Kempton this afternoon.

Four jockeys fell in the 3.20pm race, and while Steve Drowne and Ted Durcan managed to walk away from their falls, Crowley and Tylicki weren’t so fortunate.

The pair were both placed on spinal boards before being transported, Tylicki by air and Crowley by road, to hospital.

Madame Butterfly had been setting the pace in the Breeders Backing Racing EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes as they turned for the home straight but right behind the leader Tylicki, a German native, took a heavy fall on Nellie Deen in a crowded field.

With little time to react, Crowley (on Electrify) and Steve Drowne’s Skara Mae also fell before Durcan found himself among the carnage on his mount Sovrano Dolce.

Clerk of the course Barney Clifford told Racing UK: “Both jockeys have gone to St George’s in Tooting for further investigation.

“Freddy Tylicki was airlifted and Jim Crowley has gone by road ambulance.

“They both are on spinal boards. They both give their consent to me and the doctor to update their next of kin, family members etc.

“I can’t say any more than that at this stage.”

Paramedics were attending the two men for approximately an hour before they were moved and consequently, the decision was made to abandon the remaining four races on the card.

The four horses involved in the incident were not believed to be seriously injured.
