Kelly ruled out but Duff should be fit

Stephen Kelly is the latest player to be ruled out of Ireland’s play-off squad. The good news is that Damien Duff is recovering…

THERE WAS MIXED injury news for Ireland at a squad update on Sunday.

Fulham full-back Stephen Kelly has been ruled out of the second leg of the play-off against Estonia because of a groin injury, while Damien Duff – initially considered a doubt after Friday’s 4-0 win – is likely to be available for selection, according to assistant manager Marco Tardelli.

John O’Shea has recovered from a hamstring problem and is the most obvious replacement for Kelly. Duff, meanwhile, was able to train with the team on Sunday after a scan revealed no rib damage following a clash with team-mate Glenn Whelan in Tallinn.

Leon Best remains with Newcastle, receiving treatment on the injuries that forced him to withdraw from the first leg of the play-off last week.
