Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez gives Keith Stroud an earful on Wednesday night.

Under-fire referee axed from weekend fixture after Newcastle blunder

Keith Stroud had been scheduled to officiate at Gillingham v Milwall on Saturday.

REFEREE KEITH STROUD has been removed from his scheduled fixture this weekend after a bizarre penalty blunder at Newcastle United.

Stroud will not officiate Gillinghamโ€™s third-tier clash with Millwall on Saturday while the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) review Wednesdayโ€™s farcical penalty incident during a Championship game.

The 47-year-old disallowed Matt Ritchieโ€™s successful first-half penalty for Newcastle against Burton and awarded the visitors an indirect free-kick rather than ruling the spot-kick be retaken after Newcastleโ€™s Dwight Gayle encroached.

Game rules indicated Newcastle should have been allowed a second chance from 12 yards and the PGMOL confirmed Stroud had made an error.

It is not yet clear how long the review will take or when Stroud will next officiate. The PGMOL statement said the referee had apologised for his mistake.

โ€œIn the Championship game between Newcastle United and Burton Albion, referee Keith Stroud awarded Newcastle a penalty in the 29th minute,โ€ the statement read.

โ€œAs Matt Ritchie took the kick, Dwight Gayle encroached in the penalty area. An indirect free-kick was awarded to Burton, but the Laws of the Game state that the penalty kick should have been retaken.

โ€œUnfortunately, the referee has misapplied the law. Keith and his team are understandably upset at the lapse in concentration and apologise for the mistake.โ€

Newcastle won the game through a second-half goal from Ritchie to move them top of the Championship.

9/10. Agonised for ages over the Selhurst park question and then chose the wrong one.

That question was one of the only ones I got right lol. Milwall would never share a ground with Palace, would be like a south east WWIII.

Tbf to the actual club, theyโ€™ve tried to stamp the rough element out of the game. They also do massive work for charities and advocacy to keep vital services at Lewisham Hospital. Having been to the New Den, I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought, I guess it isnโ€™t fair to tarnish the whole club with one brush. But they hate Palace, lol.

I stood in the away section at the old den in New Cross once, it was a cage thankfully cause we were battered with bricks and bottles for the entire game. Scary stuff.

Jaysus. 10/10. But if the quiz was the other way around โ€“ e.g. โ€˜where do the club who used to play at Ayresome Park now play?โ€™ โ€“ then Iโ€™d be struggling to get two or three. Must really be showing my age.
