The star’s Twitter account previously indicated he was “calling it a day”.

MAYO GAA HAVE confirmed that Keith Higgins is not retiring from inter-county football, despite a tweet issued on the star’s official account indicating his career was over.

Higgins earlier appeared to have announced his retirement, after he tweeted “#callingitaday” along with a message thanking everyone for their support.

The county or player has yet to confirm why the erroneous information was put into the public domain, but the player has since tweeted suggesting the tweet was a practical joke.

Higgins is one of Mayo’s most acclaimed stars — in 2006, he won a Young Footballer of the Year All Star, which was followed by two GAA GPA All Stars Awards in 2012 and 2013.

He was part of the Mayo side that came agonisingly close to winning the All-Ireland SFC last year, and has also excelled at hurling, winning a Christy Ring Cup All Star in 2005.
