Keiren Westwood suffers suspected concussion after nasty collision with team-mate

Sheffield Wednesday have played down the concerns over his health.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY ARE hopeful Keiren Westwood didn’t suffer any lasting damage after the goalkeeper sustained a head injury during Saturday’s win at Birmingham.

The Ireland international was carried off in the eight minute of Wednesday’s 2-1 win at St Andrew’s after colliding with team-mate Tom Lees.

Westwood received nine minutes of treatment on the pitch before being taken to hospital but a club spokesperson told The42 that he was ‘up and about fine after the game.’

While local media reported the 31-year-old had suffered concussion, the club were unable to confirm the nature of his injury with manager Carlos Carvalhal likely to provide an update in his weekly press conference on Thursday.

Speaking after Saturday’s game, Wednesday coach Bullen said:

“He has got a bit of an egg on the head, a sore neck and he went to the hospital as a precaution. I believe everything is okay.”

If Westwood has indeed suffered concussion, Football Association rules state he should not be allowed return to any form of play for at least six days.

Two goals from former Celtic striker Gary Hooper helped the visitors to all three points, a win which boosts Wednesday’s promotion push.

Aiden McGeady started and played 61 minutes for the Owls.
