KATIE TAYLOR TODAY defeated Estelle Mossely of France in the European Union lightweight final to win a first gold medal since her Olympics triumph last summer.

Taylor defeated her opponent on a unanimous decision for what is her fifth European gold in total.

It takes Taylor’s overall gold medal tally to 15 in total since 2005.

There was disappointment, however, for the only other senior Irish boxer competing in today’s final – Leanne Murphy – who lost out on a unanimous decision to Turkey’s Emine Bozduman.

It was a successful day for a number for Irish boxers elsewhere though, with Jacqui Lynch, Grainne Gavin, Kristina O’Hara and Amy Broadhurst all winning their respective Junior and Youth Finals, however Ciara Sheedy and Niamh Ball lost their respective bouts.

Overall, Ireland have secured five gold, three silver and seven bronze medals at the event.
