MLS FANS WERE treated to some playacting worthy of Broadway last night as the clash between the New York Red Bulls and Sporting Kansas City ended in a controversial red card for Juninho.

With the game in stoppage time, the Brazilian tried to speed up Kansas keeper Jimmy Nielsen as he dawdled over a goal kick. Frustrated, Juninho was a little bit too enthusiastic and gave the ball a bit of a welly as he was returning it.

It caught Nielsen in the chest but in the manner of all great actors, the keeper collapsed to the ground until Juninho had been given his marching orders. Silly, yes — but a red card?

Kansas held on to win 1-0 and Nielsen’s work was done.
