Joy for Irish teenage pair as they win gold at U23 49er Sailing World Championships

Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove had a day to remember in Marseille.

IT HAS BEEN a day to remember for Irish teenagers Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove, as they took gold at the U23 49er Sailing World Championships in France today.

The duo, both aged 19, showed impressive composure during the five-day event in Marseille, which will be the sailing venue for the 2024 Olympics.

Dickson and Waddilove had shown consistent form throughout the competition and went into today’s contest as overnight leaders.

They threatened to let their lead slip, as a gear failure saw them get off to a difficult start, finishing ninth in race 10. However, they recovered superbly to prevail in the subsequent final race of the series and secure gold.

The win continues an excellent few months for Irish sailing, after Liam Glynn took home a bronze medal in the U21 Laser World Championships in July.
