TOTTENHAM BOSS JOSE Mourinho does not think the introduction of Gareth Bale was the catalyst for his sideโs late capitulation against West Ham.
Spurs were coasting to the three points as they led 3-0 after a scintillating opening 16 minutes where Son Heung-minโs goal after 45 seconds was added to by Harry Kaneโs brace.
Bale made his long-awaited return to the Spurs side after seven years away as a second-half substitute when it was still 3-0 but it all went wrong for him as the Hammers
Manuel Lanziniโs stunning stoppage-time strike completed a comeback started by Fabian Balbuena and a Davinson Sanchez own goal.
There has been plenty of hype surrounding Baleโs return, which was almost marked with a dream goal that would have made it 4-2, but Mourinho did not think Baleโs arrival affected the game in a negative manner.
โDonโt think so, honestly donโt think so,โ he said.
The decision not to start him was I think a good decision. A decision to show that he doesnโt have a beautiful chair waiting for him in the team and he sits there the first time he can.
โIt was a message to the team that in this team everybody has to fight for positions.
โHeโs very well accepted in the group. Everyone likes him, and I believe he also likes what he found here. So everything is positive and the focus was not on him.
โThe focus was on the game and he was on the bench for 65 minutes or so and I donโt think so, I donโt think at all.
โItโs a pity that he couldnโt score that fourth goal which was a beauty and would have killed the game. But thatโs football.โ
It seemed impossible Spurs would not win the game after their devastating start put the Hammers on the rack.
Son continued his hot streak with an opener after 45 seconds, before Kane scored twice in eight minutes as Spursโ goal glut carried on.
Kane hit the post in the second half before West Hamโs late, late show ruined Tottenhamโs day.
โI think you can imagine how frustrated I am and how frustrated the players are, but thatโs football,โ Mourinho said.
โUnfortunately itโs football for us in a negative way and in positive way for them but thatโs football.
Itโs easier for me to praise them than criticise us. Itโs easier for me to analyse internally and discuss with the players than speak about it and my feelings now.
โI prefer to say that they had incredible belief and probably they scored that first goal when they didnโt have that belief.
โWe were not then good enough or strong enough to cope with the last 10 minutes.โ
The emotions in the opposing dugout when Lanzini found the top corner from 20 yards in the fourth minute of stoppage time could not have been more contrasting.
Boss David Moyes was impressed with his team who continued their promising start to the season.
โWe are building a really strong team spirit,โ he said. โI think our performances in recent weeks have been very good. Our performances since lockdown have been very good.
โIt was tough, the opening 10 or 15 minutes you thought they were on fire and it was like, โHere we goโ, but after that we got a grip and controlled the game. I thought the players did really well throughout the game.
โIt is one of these moments you donโt get very often, we scored the last three goals in the last 10 minutes.
โI saw my celebrations back and all the players are laughing at me jumping up and down, it felt like a David Pleat moment.
โThis is what football is for. When you get something from nowhere it gives you emotions and I think thatโs why we are in it.
โWe never gave up, the players kept at it, it was a really proud performance.โ

2 McIlroys. A and B and flips and flops to suit himself and the circumstances. Would prefer if he just said the big money and attention is still in the US rather than skirt around the obvious!
@David Gaffney: But that is what he is saying. He lives in the stateโs cause thatโs where the money is and heโs never made a secret of that. Heโs saying as good as the changes to the European tour are, they arenโt enough to entice the top players to change what they are doing. Itโs overtly implied it what he said. Just cause he doesnโt blatantly state it doesnโt mean heโs skirting the question
@Phil Redmond:
Married to an American, his family is in Americaโฆ The bggest payouts are in Americaโฆ Totally understandableโฆ
Shane is in the same boatโฆ To play in the top competitions you have to play in the highest ranking tournamentsโฆ
@Cowboy Paddy: Exactly and the European tour events need to get much closer to the PGA in terms of prize money and ranking points if they want to start attracting the top players away from it. I doubt that will ever happen though. The PGA want to protect their place as the no 1 tour like anyone in their position would so any sign that the European tour are going to make any significant inroads into that theyโll up the prize money and keep the top players coming back to them
@Phil Redmond: it absolutely does mean he is skirting around it! Why not just say it. Why talk like a politician that is evasive and wonโt commit!?
@David Gaffney: Non committal choker and mercenary. #136daystillmoreRorycomedygold
