'Eighth or ninth is not for me' - Mourinho rejects Newcastle links

The Portuguese has no interest in succeeding Rafael Benitez at an English club for the second time.

JOSE MOURINHO HAS given a clear indication that the vacant managerโ€™s position at Newcastle United doesnโ€™t appeal to him, saying that taking charge of a club where the objective is to stay in the top half of the table not in his nature.

The Magpies are searching for a new manager following the failure to agree a deal with Rafael Benitez, whose three-year spell at the club is set to end when his contract expires on Sunday.

Mourinho has been without a job in football since he left Manchester United in December 2018 and was linked with the vacancy at St. Jamesโ€™ Park.

He succeeded Benitez at Chelsea in 2013, but history looks unlikely to repeat itself this summer.

But in an interview with The Coachesโ€™ Voice he gave a clear description of the kind of job he does not want to take on.

โ€œThe only thing I know is what I donโ€™t want,โ€ said Mourinho.

โ€œWhat I donโ€™t want is crystal clear. I am quite pathological in the sense that I have to play to win. Then, if I win or if I donโ€™t win, thatโ€™s my problem and the players and the club and the structure. But I need a project where the feeling is I play to win.

โ€œIf someone gives me a wonderful, amazing 10-year contract and says the objective of the team is to stay in the first part of the table, and if you finish seventh or eighth or ninth itโ€™s perfect, thatโ€™s not for me. Thatโ€™s not my nature.

โ€œItโ€™s not me. My next is to fight to win.โ€

Mourinho was linked with Juventus before the Italian champions appointed Maurizio Sarri as their new head coach, and the former Inter and Porto boss said he is open to working in a new setting when he takes his next job.

He offered a reminder of his unparalleled success as a manager in Europeโ€™s top leagues, while hinting that a role in charge of a national team is not out of the question.

โ€œIโ€™m quite flexible to adapt,โ€ said Mourinho. โ€œIโ€™m quite flexible to sometimes go against my own ideas and choose the right way to succeed.

โ€œI am until now the only manager that won the league in England, Italy and Spain. You need that flexibility, that control of the environment. You need to adapt to the reality of the club, of the competition, even socially you need to understand the needs, the aims, the motivations of everyone.

โ€œThatโ€™s why I say that Iโ€™m really rich with this kind of experience โ€“ thatโ€™s why I donโ€™t close the door to a new country, to a new competition because Iโ€™ve always liked this feeling of the unknown and this feeling: can I win?โ€

Watched the game. I have to say, I sometimes questioned some of the refereeeโ€™s decisions during the game (such as multiple high tackles before a yellow card was given).

But I beg to ask what is going on with Connacht. They lost just 2 players form the championship winning team last season, but theyโ€™ve lost control of their own basics and skills that made them so successful.

A complete lack of a pre season was a factor, the last 5 minutes sum this up.

Maybe a bit of credit to Glasgow and the Ospreys
    They both played extremely well

Always felt last seasons pro12 was seriously skewed by the world cup. Teams like ospreys & glasgow really werent at their best. Whereas connacht & scarlets made hay, both are 0-2 so far now. Hope its not a sign of things to come. Although to be fair its been a tough start to the season.

I would expect both to get top 4 with Leinster and Ulster the favourites to be there with them. Improved performance this week from the team but a bad pre-season, injuries and teams becoming more aware in how to play us has been the main factors in our poor start. The defence has been really poor in both games conceding tries from our own half which we werenโ€™t doing for the majority of last season. The half back pairing in both games have been very poor, Marmion seems to have regressed from where he was about 2 seasons ago and Cartyโ€™s kicking is a liability at this stage nowhere near good enough for this level, Boshoff cant come soon enough and I would probably go with SOโ€™L in the mean time. Itโ€™s still early and we played two excellent teams so I wouldnโ€™t be pushing any panic buttons yet and with Zebre up next we should stop the rot with a win next week.

I donโ€™t think the losses of McGinty and Muldowney can be understated. Henshaw is obviously a big loss too (Griffin has been poor so far) but those two were central to launching our attacks last year and were massive defensively. The lack of a proper preseason and the injury list doesnโ€™t help either. Most of the lads looked goosed after an hour tonight.

Not uncommon for surprise champions to have an indifferent start to the season now that theyโ€™re the ones to beat. Itโ€™s only round 2 of 22 though so itโ€™s a bit early to hold crisis talks but Connacht need to pick it up for the next game.

When Connacht were winning last year we barely got a mention in the journalโ€ฆ. Leinster got off to bad start too last year,,,,,, itโ€™ll be grand, theyโ€™ll regroup and turn it aroundโ€ฆ. To early to be in a panic

Fitness is the key issue here, those last 2 tries sum this up, taking the ball in there own half and essentially running over for a try. Zebre couldnโ€™t have come at a better time.

At this stage the top 6 looks far superior to the bottom 6.

Lack of decent preseason training games have hurt them badly but letโ€™s not lose the run of ourselves here. They had a terrible game but showed glimpses of last seasons quality in the first match and made massive improvements to this match. Next week Iโ€™ll put money on them winning or at least it being a very tight scoreline and I donโ€™t even know who theyโ€™re playing right now. Itโ€™s game 2. They didnโ€™t go unbeaten last season either and won it. No need for alarm bells, and this from a leinster supporter. Cudnโ€™t have been happier with a defeat last season, look forward to some great local derby games this year.

For conspiracy theorists 2 Welsh refs 2 games! For honesty missing MacGinty and Aly abilities to defend and force attack. Skills still there fitness improving. Oโ€™Leary should be given a chance now. Muls needs help canโ€™t lead the team on his own so far personally Iโ€™ve not seen anyone step up to the plate to do so . If thereโ€™s leaders there they need to show themselves now before we actually do have a crisis.
