Spieth’s win has led to suggestions he may develop a famous rivalry with McIlroy, the 25-year-old Northern Irish world number one with four majors to his name. But Spieth, who spoke about the respect the tour’s younger players have for one another, played that down.
“He’s got four majors. That’s something I can still only dream about and just numerous wins,” he said. ”I’ll never hit it as far as he does and I’ll have to make up for that somewhere else.
“He’s an unbelievably nice guy, carries the world number one with class and I don’t know as far as a rivalry right now.
“I look forward to get into the heat of the moment with him a few times in the near future and see if we can battle it out and test our games.”
Spieth said he was excited by the young talent coming through, insisting the players all wished each other well.
“I think it’s great. There’s an incredible amount of young talent, guys are coming out and winning quickly and a lot,” he said.
“We’re all very respectful of each other, we all root for each other. It’s not like I’m out there with Patrick Reed saying ‘I hope he misses this putt’. I hope he makes this and I hope I make two in a row on top.”
