IRELAND’S JORDAN SLOAN ran out of steam on his final length as he failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the men’s 200m freestyle at the European Swimming Championships.
Sloan, who celebrated his 25th birthday last Friday, went off at a strong pace and was looking strong in third place at the halfway mark.
He improved into second with 50 metres to go but as the rest of the field kicked on around him, his early exertions took their toll and he faded into 10th place.

His time of 1:50.76 was more than three seconds slower than his Irish record.
“I don’t know what to say,” a disappointed Sloan told RTÉ Sport. “It just didn’t happen today.
“I actually felt really good. My stroke felt fine. I think I’ve just burnt out throughout the year.
“I’ve been three seconds faster than that this year. It’s completely out of nowhere.”
In the men’s 50m butterfly, Armagh’s Calum Bain swam a time of 24.93, also finishing 10th in his heat and well outside the semi-final qualification places.
