Walters and McShane doubts for Greece friendly

The pair sat out training today ahead of the Republic of Ireland’s friendly against Greece on Wednesday.

GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI MUST wait to see if Jonathan Walters and Paul McShane will be fit to face Greece on Wednesday night.

Trapattoni is expected to name his starting 11 after training tomorrow, but there are doubts over Walters (knee) and McShane (calf) who sat out today’s session in Malahide.

Both players are due to have scans but assistant manager Marco Tardelli said that he expects the “little problems” to clear up ahead of the friendly in the Aviva Stadium.

McShane played 56 minutes in Hull’s 2-1 defeat at Cardiff on Saturday and picked up “a little problem in the calf,” Tardelli said.

“But I think it’s normal after the match that the player have a problem.”

Regarding Walters’ participation, Tardelli said: “I think it’s ok for the match. I don’t know if he will play in the first or the second half but I think it’s possible.”

In the absence of regular skipper Robbie Keane, John O’Shea will again captain the side. Otherwise, Tardelli remained tight-lipped about the possible changes Trapattoni will make.

“We’ll wait until Wednesday, or tomorrow after the last training.

“I think we will change some players because we want to understand if the new players are good or not. We think they are good but we must show ourselves that they can stay with us.”
