Walters ruled out 'for weeks' as play-off hopes fade

The Irish striker could be absent for much longer than expected.

IRELAND STRIKER JON Walters looks all but certain to miss the World Cup qualifying play-offs after it emerged he would be out of action for “weeks, not days” according to a report on eir Sport today.

The Burnley forward — who sat out Ireland’s recent wins over Moldova and Wales through injury — had hoped to be back in action soon, but a spokesman for his club told the broadcaster that was unlikely:

Sean Dyche doesn’t usually comment on injury timeframes because he prefers not to put pressure on the player to come back on a set date, but Sean has said before that he expects Jon to be out for weeks and not days.”

Walters only joined the Clarets in July but has found his game time limited to just 28 minutes and hasn’t lined out for the club since mid-August.

He was last seen for Ireland during the 1-0 loss to Serbia in early September.

The World Cup qualifying play-offs will take place in November with Ireland set to face one of Croatia, Denmark, Italy or Switzerland.
