BURNLEY’S RECENT SIGNING Jon Walters enjoyed a promising start to life with his new club at Tallaght Stadium tonight.
The Ireland striker, who joined the Clarets from Stoke City this week, was handed his first start in a pre-season friendly against SSE Airtricity League Premier Division outfit Shamrock Rovers.
And the 33-year-old — one of five Irish players in the Burnley squad — responded with a debut goal. Walters was played through by fellow debutant Jack Cork and made no mistake to score past Hoops keeper Kevin Horgan before being taken off after 33 minutes.
As they did against Celtic last week, Rovers put out a second-string team and Ashley Barnes doubled the visitors’ advantage early in the second half.
Dubliner Robbie Brady then added a third after being teed up by a move involving former Bohemians man Stephen Ward and Wales international Sam Vokes.
And Vokes made it 4-0 before the final whistle in fortuitous circumstances. Ireland’s Jeff Hendrick had a pop at goal and the strike deflected off the striker’s back and crept in under the bar.

Extra training to shed weight on 850 grand/wk! What a star!
Easy on the kebabs now Tevez.
Great player but starting to become the most hateful character in football. The money he’s on and he decided all by himself to do some extra training. Pr*ck
He should ask for a raise
