Johnny Magee has stepped down as Wicklow manager after three years in charge

Wicklow were dumped out of the qualifiers by Laois last weekend.

WICKLOW MANAGER JOHNNY Magee has announced his decision to step down from the role, bringing an end to his three-year term in charge.

RTร‰ Sport have reported the former Dublin footballer decided to resign as manager of the Garden County following their two-point defeat to Laois in Round 1A of the qualifiers last weekend.

It was a disappointing year for Wicklow, who managed just one win in Division 4 before they fell to a 1-19 to 1-14 loss to Louth in the Leinster SFC preliminary round.

Magee, who spent a decade at centre-back for Dublin and captained Kilmacud Crokes to All-Ireland glory, had to deal with significant squad turnover during his three-year term.

โ€œI was reading the other day about the Clare hurlers,โ€ he told The Star last year. โ€œDavy Fitzgerald has 34 in his backroom team. He has more in his backroom team than I have bleeding training.โ€

Wicklow have plenty of time to appoint a successor, considering they wonโ€™t play another competitive game until 2018.

Would be very disappointed if 6 of the Blackrock squad arenโ€™t capped by Ireland this summer

Tremendous game, albeit defence-dominated, well worth a watch by those who can. Munster fans would enjoy another top performance by Michael Oโ€™Sullivan, the Blackrock openside

@Kevin Ryan: agreed. I thought that lad was excellent. Is he a Munster kid?

@Jack Kirwan: From Kerry apparently, and definitely in the Munster system. So, for example, played for Munster against Leinster in the U19 interpro last August
