LAST NIGHT THE greatly anticipated documentary GILES was aired on RTÉ One. The documentary, which revealed the highs and lows in the legendary career of Johnny Giles, showed how he always aimed to be a great player rather than a big star.
The documentary was definitely worth a watch, regardless of whether you’re a sports fan or not. Rather than your typical highlight reel, GILES is a lesson on having the confidence to realise and appreciate when you have a talent or a gift.
It’s a tear-jerkingly sentimental look at how Johnny Giles managed to make the most of his life and career as a footballer. From inner city Dublin where he began his career in Dalymount Park, playing for Stella Maris to Old Trafford where he later signed for Man United, to Leeds United, to thirty years working with RTÉ.
He’s had an outstanding career and has widely been regarded as one of the greatest football players to come out of Ireland.
GILES shows the honest and passionate side of Johnny Giles and serves as a reminder of his talents not only as a brilliant football player, but also as a beloved broadcaster.
People turned to Twitter to applaud the lovely documentary.
It highlighted the generational bond people have with football.
If you missed it, it’s on the RTÉ player and definitely worth catching up with.

Is that really worthy of an article?
@Teddyzigzagbigbag: Yes, yes it is. Discrimination should always be challenged snd it should be highlighted that someone in his position had the balls & awareness to so.
Nonsense. I think it was a ridiculous thing to comeback and say. The journalist quite clearly meant men’s tennis, the competition that Murray competes in. Can’t believe he’s gettin credited for this.
@Matthew Thompson: Exactly. He was just being pedantic and knows the feminists and PC police would lap it up. Anymore of this carry on and he can get the snip and join the WTA.
@Matthew Thompson: he’s no longer Scottish now he has lost
He’s British again
Why didn’t he also clarify what underage or senior American players have made the semis since 2009? Soooo ageist.
@Dermot Byrne: what about the Bryan Brothers? Sooo quantityist
Really is there any need to post this tripe on the 42. Fair enough on the primarkesque teenage girl feminist blog that the Daily Edge has become…
Unfair on the journalist, it’s the same as saying the USA have never won the World Cup in an interview after a mans game.
Holy shyte, What a complete non-story. Of course the reporter ment “Male Player” It was implied in the context of the situation, Men’s Tennis. Does anyone serious think this reporter doesn’t know of Serena Williams or that he intended any disrespect whatsoever?
Murray, a totally uncharismatic guy deflecting attention away from his loss which he claims was down to hip injury but the previos day claimed was not an issue. Good luck to him, his Mammy is proud of him!
There’s an article further down the page about Chris Martin from Coldplay visiting a gym in Dublin… why are you’s not over there banging on about articles being irrelevant??
I like Murray even less now.
Andy Murray. The only sports personality that makes steve Davies look like a party animal. Paint drying is more exciting to watch than Murray in an interview. A complete plonker Rodney. Correcting the journalist was complete nonsense..the subject was clear as day..mens singles. .
Well, unsurprisingly a bunch of people on here giving out stink about this, as there always is. I personally was delighted to see AM make this point. Don’t care if you call me a “feminazi” or PC pedant.
I’m fine with his comment but not so much the holier-than-thou article making a big deal of it.
What a stupid article…and Murray just being an arrogant knobhead. Reporter was asking a simple question…
@Kev Creed: what a stupid comment kev are you being an arrogant knob head? just asking a simple question
