John Sugrue in line for another year with Laois footballers

The Kerry native had been named amongst the contenders for the vacant job in the Kingdom.

LAOIS GAA CHIEFS have confirmed that John Sugrue will be put forward for ratification as the county’s senior football coach for another season.

The Kerry native took over the county side last year, leading them to victory in the Division 4 league final.

The O’Moore County then reached the Leinster SFC final, where they faced provincial kingpins Dublin. The county’s season ended with a round 4 defeat against Monaghan in the qualifiers.

Sugrue — who initially agreed to a one-season term last year — lives in Portlaoise and runs his own physio business. He trained Kerry during Pat O’Shea’s tenure in 2007 and 2008.

A native of Renard in Kerry, he won county senior medals as a midfielder with South Kerry in 2004 and 2005 and managed the divisional side to a 2015 county senior title victory.

Sugrue had been mentioned as a potential outside bet to replace Eamonn Fitzmaurice, who recently vacated the manager’s position in Kerry.
