Mullane sticks to promise to 'jump on a horse in the nude and go down the Quays' if Waterford win

‘If the lads do pull it off, I’m sure we can come to some sort of agreement. We might get a charity involved.’

FORMER WATERFORD STAR John Mullane has said that he’ll stick to his promise and ‘jump on a horse in the nude and go down the Quays’ if his beloved Déise win the All-Ireland hurling final on Sunday.

Before the campaign kicked off, he backed Galway to go all the way this year on Sunday Sport, saying it was ‘written in the stars’.

“If Waterford win the All-Ireland I’ll jump on a horse in the nude and go down the Quays!” he added.

And here we are, with Waterford and Galway going head-to-head for the Liam MacCarthy Cup on Sunday. And Mullane is 70 minutes away from having to fulfill his promise.

He’s standing by his word though, and told Darren Frehill on Morning Ireland today that he’d follow through with his promise.

“At the time, it was a bit of fun,” he laughed.

“It would be out of elation if we did pull it off, but look, if the lads do pull it off I’m sure we can come to some sort of agreement. We might get a charity involved, and possibly get a few bob for the lads’ team holiday.

“The lads have given us a fantastic summer. The last three years, we’ve been up and down the country with this team and no matter what happens, whether we win, lose or draw, we’re very proud of this team.

“Hopefully we can raise a few bob. Willie Mullins, Aidan O’Brien, Jim Bolger, if they want to promote their horse and they want to get their picture taken with me going down the Quays with Liam MacCarthy over the course of the next couple of months, get the money out and we’ll talk then!”

Listening back to his previous predictions, he rowed back slightly and showed his true blue and white colours.

“What do I say to that?” he grinned, as they were played back. “Look, after that league final I was very, very impressed by them [Galway]. They had the three S’s — speed, skill and strength.

“What they are meeting, they’re meeting their match in Waterford. Waterford have speed, skill and strength.

“Now look, the closer it gets I’m going to have my Waterford hat on.”
