Ireland's John Joe Nevin secures convincing victory on pro debut

The two-time Olympian ultimately won the six-rounder with a final score of 59-55.

IRELAND’S JOHN JOE Nevin claimed victory on his debut as a professional boxer in Boston last night.

The Olympic silver medallist defeated Puerto Rican featherweight Alberto Candelaria in what was a unanimous decision during the Murphys Boxing USA co-promotion at the House of Blues.

Nevin’s triumph was well deserved, as he ultimately won the six-rounder with a final score of 59-55.

Commenting after the match, Nevin said: “The reception was unbelievable. It means so much to me to win on my professional debut on St Patrick’s Day.”

Meanwhile, Dublin light-welter Jamie Kavanagh also won on the night, overcoming another Puerto Rican fighter, Andres Navarro (80-72, 79-73, 79-73).
