JOHN JOE NEVIN delivered a confident performance to see off Kazakhstan’s Kanat Abutalipov this afternoon.
The Mullingar boxer, who is competing in the 56kg bantamweight event, controlled the three rounds against his 29-year-old opponent to win out by an eventual score of 15-10.
After a cagey start by both fighters, Nevin was 5-2 up after the opening bell and extended that lead to 10-5 in the second round.
Next up for the two-time world amateur championships gold medallist is Mexico’s Oscar Valdez Fierro, who overcame Anvar Yunusov of Tajikistan in his round of 16 bout.

That fight is scheduled for this Sunday, August 5, at 8.45pm.
