Allen to play waiting game before deciding on Limerick future

John Allen refused to be drawn on his future after yesterday’s disappointing semi-final defeat to Clare.

JOHN ALLEN EXPECTS to meet the Limerick county board and make a decision on his managerial future within “the next few weeks.”

Allen steered Limerick to their first Munster hurling title since 1996 when they beat Cork in the provincial decider last month.

But his contract ran out in Croke Park yesterday as his side were played off the park and beaten by Clare in the first of this year’s All-Ireland semi-finals.

Allen signed up for a two-year term when he replaced Donal O’Grady in October 2011 and with that now at an end, he said there has been no discussion with county bosses regarding an extension or otherwise yet.

“I initially agreed to two years so I’ll talk to the board over the next few weeks and we can discuss that,” he said when asked if he would like to stay on and build on the success of this summer.

“I’m not sure really. I don’t know is the answer. The board might say to me, ‘Sorry John, your time is up.’

“I haven’t spoken to them and they haven’t spoken to me about it so it’s something for the next few weeks maybe.”
