Joey O'Brien ruled out of Poland friendly

The full back will return to West Ham for treatment

A HAMSTRING INJURY has forced Joey O’Brien to withdraw from the Ireland squad ahead of their friendly with Poland on Tuesday.

The West Ham full back pulled up with the injury before Ireland’s 3-0 victory over Latvia on Tuesday.

Speaking yesterday, manager Martin O’Neill said the 27-year old was due to have a precautionary scan on his leg.

“He felt a little bit last night in the warm-up and so, even if there was an opportunity last night to play him, we wouldn’t have done so in case there might be some risk.”

That scan has proven the Irish management team were right to be cautious with the player and O’Brien will now return to West Ham for treatment. A replacement is not expected to be called up.
