Joe Gomez out for the rest of the season after tearing his cruciate ligament

Gomez was injured on international duty on Tuesday.

LIVERPOOL DEFENDER JOE Gomez is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn cruciate ligament on international duty.

The 18-year-old, who has impressed for the Reds since his move for Charlton during the summer, went down injured late on in England U21′s 3-0 win against Kazakhstan, and it’s being reported this evening that scans have revealed a torn cruciate ligament.

It’s the first blow new manager Jürgen Klopp will have to deal with since his arrival last week, with the defender likely to be out for the rest of the season.

After arriving from Charlton, Gomez went straight into the Liverpool starting line-up, starting their first five league games of the campaign.

However, he has been an unused substitute in each of Liverpool’s last three games, since his penalty concession against Manchester United in September.

Despite that, he has also featured for the club in the Europa League against Bordeaux and Sion, completing 90 minutes in both games.

The club have not confirmed the extent of Gomez’s knee injury, but several UK media outlets report that he will require ACL surgery, putting him on the sidelines for between six and nine months.
